Two ways of how laser system functions are usually distinguished: first, when the laser beam draws figures on flat surface - special translucent mesh, water screen, decorations, etc. and, second, 3D figures in space (this category called 'beam show' also may include dynamical shooting to external mirrors and effects); however, in everyday practice we often combine both graphics and spatial 3D effects, for example, when besides screen functioning, extra projectors are used that fill with rays the space to the left and to the right of the screen and above the spectators.
The laser movies created created by artists are in essence small, logically complete plays (this is what we hope for, at least :) in which, according to our view, several things must be present: intro, subject development, culmination and outro (of code). Usually the movies are syncronized with soundtrack played from control computer. Accompaniment of artists performances with laser effects is performed by an operator in real-time. It can consist of beam-effects or graphics, for instance, animated logotypes of sponsors, name of event, slogans prepared by painter.
When preliminary coordination of scenario and topic of movie is undertaken, it is preferrable that photos, writings, logotypes are passed to us in digital form either sent by e-mail. Musical accompaniment theme can be proposed by us either provided by director as Audio CD.
The workstations Lasergraph DSP we use are professional specialized computers that determine the quality of laser movies composition. Besides certain inconvenience connected with proprietary operational system and non-friendly interface, Lasergraph DSP possesses a lot of advantages in comparison with other laser software: the features include creation of mathematical models, perfect algortihms of object masking, soft-blanking (abscence of bright dots at line endings), ability to set practically any parameters (for example, object movement, color change, transformations) with the help of calculated variables either according to constructed curve (by graphic plot).
And, finally, a few words about our most interesting installations. The presentation of VW company involved 11 laser projectors, and at our stand at annual exhibition 'Music - Moscow' in 2003 there were 8 projectors, two of them were projecting to a screen. Solo-concert of Vitas in Russia is worth mentioning: besides 4 projectors working "towards the public", mirrors and gratings were installed in the downstage and on the decorations.
